The Erewash Canal

runs from Trent Lock rising about 110 feet via 14 locks  during its journey through Derbyshire to Langley Mill in Nottinghamshire.

Completed in 1779, it started out as a very profitable canal, but by the middle of the 19th century trade began to decline due to the impact of the railways and then the closure of the Cromford Canal due to a tunnel collapse.

By the end of World War Two it was in complete decline, the canal was nationalised and commercial traffic ceased in 1952.

Businesses close to the canal in Long Eaton were alarmed by an article in the local paper in 1967 reporting that the government  intended to close the canal and make it a remainder waterway.

About Us

The Erewash Canal Preservation & Development Association (ECP&DA) was formed as a direct result of the newspaper article published in 1967. Local residents, business proprietors and councillors got together and formed the Erewash Canal Action Committee, which later became ECP&DA.

The ECP&DA is a Registered Charity No. 1173704 Headquarters: 130 Derby Road, Langley Mill, Derbyshire NG16 4AA

The ECP&DA was formed in 1968 to protect the Erewash canal from closure. In the years since ECP&DA have been very pro-active in looking after the whole length of the Erewash Canal for the benefit of local residents and visitors to the Erewash Valley and surrounding area.
